Green Season

Tanzania's magic unfolds in January as the green season paints the Serengeti plains a lush emerald green. This scenic transformation creates the perfect backdrop for exceptional wildlife viewing with minimal dust. January is warm and ideal for safaris, coinciding with the awe-inspiring climax of the Great Migration. Witness massive herds congregate on the plains, attracting a multitude of predators. Nature thrives in January, with many animals giving birth to coincide with the abundance of the green season.

Expect occasional brief showers, typically lasting only a couple of hours. Heavier rains usually arrive in April, so these short bursts pose minimal disruption to your safari. Embark on an unforgettable Tanzanian adventure in January with Kiriche Safaris and experience the beauty of the reborn landscape, witness a dazzling array of wildlife, and be captivated by the wonders of the Great Migration.

Higher rainfall

Rainfall patterns vary across Tanzania's northern regions. The Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara tend to receive more precipitation than most areas of the Serengeti. Interestingly, rainfall increases significantly as you travel northwest across the Serengeti, thanks to prevailing easterly winds. The Ngorongoro Highlands act as a natural barrier, blocking much of this moisture from reaching the eastern and southern plains. Conversely, the western and northern areas (influenced by nearby Lake Victoria) receive substantially more rain - up to two to three times the amount compared to the south and east.

The good news for your January safari? The southern Serengeti, your prime target location, experiences significantly less rainfall compared to other areas. Occasional showers might occur, but they are typically brief and won't significantly disrupt your wildlife viewing adventure.
